Chapter 35
âHi, Tierra, come on in,â Holly said, trying not to yawn. âHi, Ms. MacKintor.â
âSo youâre Holly! Tierraâs said a lot about you.â Marli MacKintor gave a quick smile that momentarily eased visible lines in her face.
âOnly good things, I hope,â Trayne Owen said. âWould you like to come in . . . Marli, is it? Have a cup of coffee?â
âOh, God, Iâd love to, but I barely have time to get to work as it is. I canât say how grateful I am that youâre letting Tierra come over here this early.â Holly noted that while Marli had the same brilliant red hair of her daughter, Marliâs was streaked with gray and she had the pinched look of someone under constant worry.
âWell, we were all caught off guard, to say the least, by what happened at the school. As Holly was going to have her friends over anyway, itâs no problem at all. But if you canât come in and sit down, I insist you at least take one of these muffins; when I knew youâd be coming this early I baked someââ
The part of Holly that was Steve recognized the almost too intense longing in both Marli and Tierraâs face at the sight of the home-baked goods. âWell, I suppose I could take oneââ
âTake two, here, I have a bag.â
âWell . . . thank you very much, Trayne.â Marliâs flash of a smile was very like Tierraâs. âTierra, you behave yourselfââ
âMooommmm, Iâm not five years old anymore!â
âAll the more reason to behave yourself,â Marli said, then gave her obviously slightly embarrassed daughter a hug. âIâll pick her upââ
âNo need, Iâll bring her home. If they donât decide to all sleep over and make it impossible for me to sleep. I understand the schoolâs closed for an entire week, so itâs an unexpected vacation.â
âWell . . . Iâll call you later.â She glanced at her phone. âGod, I have to go. Bye!â
Once her car had departed the driveway, Holly saw Tierra sink slowly down into one of the chairs, eyes scanning the room. She knew that look, too.
âYour momâs kinda run ragged, isnât she?â
âTwo jobs, sometimes three,â Tierra said, with that expression of defiant embarrassment that showed a past filled with both sneers and oppressive, useless sympathy.
And Iâve never heard her mentionâ
âAnd . . . no other parent?â Silvertail asked gently.
Tierra grimaced. âWell . . . um, can I have one of thoseââ
âOf course. I made them for everyone.â
Tierra took one of the muffins and bit into it. âOrrmgrrrd, thssâs gud,â she mumbled ecstatically through her second huge mouthful, then swallowed. âYeah, well, like I was saying, I have a father. Biologically. Other than that, heâs an asshole. Sorry.â
âNo need to apologize. So your mother takes care of you by herself and cannot afford to miss work because school schedules change. Donât worry; weâll handle that part for her during the time school is unexpectedly out. Youâre always welcome here.â
âItâll mean a lot to her.â
In the back of her mind, Holly/Steve had already decided that theyâd do more than just play babysitter occasionally.
